Hillary Clinton is taking a page from Bernie Sanders' playbook and appealing to small dollar donors.

This is a first for me. It’s a donation request from the Hillary Clinton campaign for $20.16. It is also evidence that Bernie Sanders is changing the way politics are funded today. He’s proving that small money matters.

Through Jan. 31, seventy percent of all the money Sanders took in was from small donors ($200 or less), according to the Center for Responsive Politics, an independent group that tracks campaign finance data. Clinton raised a little under 17 percent of her total fundraising from individuals, according to the report.

Sanders’ success in flogging his “$27 average donation” message has resonated. It has forced Clinton to respond with a better offer. Attention K-Mart shoppers!

But why stop there? He needs to stay in the race and continue to pull Hillary Clinton as far toward his policies as possible before she wins the nomination. The biggest threat to the Democratic Party is not Donald Trump. The biggest threat is missing the opportunity to vigorously debate the issues that have drawn record numbers of young and first time voters into the process. That would be a shame.
